On Friday, December 6th, 2013, CobraMetal.Net’s Andrew Melendez conducted a phone interview with legendary frontman Phil H. Anselmo (PHA & The Illegals, Down, Superjoint Ritual, Pantera). Enjoy!
LOS ANGELES, CA – Philip Anselmo and his band The Illegals – guitarist Marzi Montazeri (Superjoint Ritual), bassist Steve Taylor (16 Horsepower, Woven Hand), and Jose Manual “Blue” Gonzalez (Warbeast) on drums – will hit the road bright and early in 2014 for Leg Two of its “Technicians of Distortion” tour. The trek kicks off January 10 in Houston, will play intimate rock clubs exclusively, and is in support of Anselmo’s first solo album, the critically-acclaimed Walk Through Exits Only that was released last July, as well as the recently-released, limited-edition two-song Housecore Horror Fest 10-inch vinyl EP that will be available for purchase on all tour dates.
Tickets go on sale this Friday, November 22 – log onto TheHousecoreRecords.com for all ticketing information.
Reprising his support slot from Leg One will be Author & Punisher, while the avant-garde metal band Hymns (signed to Anselmo’s label Housecore Records) will open all shows. Hymn’s self-titled album will be available on all tour dates.

Phil Anselmo & The Illegals
“Walk Through Exits Only”
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I first gave Phil Anselmo & The Illegals “Walk Through Exits Only” a full listen; but within the first minute or so, one thing became crystal clear: This album is unlike anything “The Kid” has ever released. In a career that has seen him front 3 legendary bands (Superjoint Ritual, Pantera, and Down) it isn’t uncommon for one’s creativity to plateau, but “WTEO” finds Phil Anselmo tapping into a darker and more personal side that fans may not be accustomed to. Seeing as though fans were fortunate to hear 3 of the 8 songs on “Walk Through Exits Only” over the course of the past few months, it may be redundant to point out that this record, again, sounds very different. But it’s the lyrical content found in the album’s opener “Music Media is My Whore” that really gives context to what we’ve been listening to these past few months:
“The rise of authentic anti-music
(And) ominous sonorities, (and) relentless, iteratednon-melody…
A shuddering original unlike…
Anything that has come before;
A bastard sheet of sound…”
Phil Anselmo is at war and “Walk Throgh Exits Only” is a call to arms of sorts. Done with the constant harassment of the music media about his past and frustrated with the limitations of record labels and genres, Phil Anselmo has created something that is unique, powerful and downright game changing. With elements of sludge, groove metal, death and a splash of black metal, Phil Anselmo & The Illegals have created an 8 song masterpiece that I can only categorize as music. Great, heavy fucking music.
It’s worth mentioning that Phil is backed by a lineup of superb musicians that play the organized chaos found in “WTEO” with great care and skill. “Walk Through Exits Only” is a must have for any fan, of any degree of heavy music as it not only provides listeners with a new and exciting take on “the genre,” (depending on which one you choose IF you absolutely must) but it reminds us as to why Phil is still regarded as one of the greatest metal front men of all time. -MF

LOS ANGELES, CA – Philip Anselmo, legendary frontman of Pantera and Down, will release his career-first solo album, Walk Through Exits Only, on July 16 via his own Housecore Records (MRI/Megaforce). Walk Through Exits Only will be available digitally, on CD and on vinyl.
Produced by Philip Anselmo and Michael Thompson, and recorded over the past couple of years at his New Orleans studio, Nodferatu’s Lair, with his band The Illegals – Marzi Montazeri/guitar, and drummer Jose Manuel “Blue” Gonzalez, Walk Through Exits Only is abrasive, aggressive, anthemic and 100% Anselmo. The album’s eight songs are as unstrained as it gets, from “Battalion of Zero” to “Usurper’s Bastard Rant,” to the album’s title track that goes against the grain and right through the exits. Brash, brutal guitars cut through punishing percussion as Anselmo screams with uncompromising ferocity and uncontainable fire.
“It wasn’t about doing a paint-by-numbers thrash or heavy metal record,” Anselmo explained about the project. ”It’s an angry album that only I could do. I don’t see anybody else out there screaming about the same shit I’m screaming about. On this album, there isn’t any wordplay, there isn’t any hidden message, it’s all right there in front of you.”
Anselmo and the Illegals will support the new album with a major North American tour planned for this summer.
On Walk Through Exits Only and over his entire career, Anselmo hasn’t just paved his own path, he’s bulldozed it with his bare hands.
